Here’s why Chelsea should prioritize £60m man as next outgoing
Failure to adapt
Although the team overall had a disappointing season, Cucurella’s failure to hit his stride with Chelsea is concerning for his future with the team. The Spaniard was often deployed as a left back or left wingback when Chilwell was out injured and while he did put in decent performances early on and had great games at times, his form was inconsistent throughout the campaign. Going forward Cucurella was rather passive, a shell of his energetic and daring self at Brighton. He was not prone to losing the ball but would often make the safest backwards or sidewards passes, rarely ever progressing the play and searching for line breaking passes.
Defensively Cucurella wasn’t impressive either. Despite his energy in the press, he was consistently outpaced by trickier and faster wingers. In addition, he was liable to get caught out of position numerous times this season when an opposition attacker made a run in behind the defence. Overall, it was quite unclear exactly what Cucurella brought to the team and as the season progressed Ben Chilwell was the consensus better player at that position.
