Why Chelsea should prioritize £60m man as next outgoing

Better youth options
The injuries to Ben Chilwell and Cucurella’s inconsistency left ample time for youngster Lewis Hall to show what he could provide at left back. Despite it not being his natural position, the 18-year-old heavily impressed. Specifically going forward, he was more adept than Cucurella at contributing to the attack, never shy in his dribbling and ball progression while having a knack for finding good crosses. Although his youth was exploited through his inexperience defensively, Hall proved he’s worth consistent opportunities with the first team.
Another academy player that impressed at left back is Ian Maatsen on loan at Burnley. The Dutch defender had his breakout this past campaign and played a major part in Burnley winning the EFL Championship and securing a Premier League spot next season. The player is just as prolific as Hall going forward but is more stable defensively and can easily slot in as a second option to Ben Chilwell next season. Cucurella’s departure could open the door for both Maatsen and Hall to be first team regulars.
More money on the books
It is unlikely Marc Cucurella will ever be more valuable than he is right now in a Chelsea shirt. His market value has plummeted after his first season with the blues and the club would be lucky if they were to recoup even half of the fee they paid for him. Although nothing concrete, there have been lukewarm reports that CFC are interested in selling him for around £30m and Newcastle are reportedly keen on the deal. If the reports are true, the club should be happy to offload him at that price. However, given he was such a big money signing last season, it’s possible he stays and proves his worth under Mauricio Pochettino. If the decision is to sell him though, now would be the time to do it.
