PSG set to beat Chelsea for second time this summer as €40m deal on verge of completion
Chelsea have been planning a midfield revolution this summer as they look to build a robust midfield by signing midfielders that will complement Enzo Fernandez. Moises Caicedo remains a top priority for CFC but they have also considered other central midfielders like Gabri Veiga.
Chelsea also had another name on their list, Manuel Ugarte. The Sporting midfielder had a release clause of £53 million and Sporting would only accept a deal if the release clause is triggered. CFC were highly interested in Ugarte with Mauricio Pochettino also giving his green light for the Blues to push to sign the Uruguayan.
However, PSG were also in the race to sign Ugarte. PSG were offering better salary to the Uruguayan. CFC in the end pulled out of the deal and the Ligue 1 champions won the race to sign Ugarte. The West London outfit also considered Celta Vigo midfielder Veiga as an alternative to Ugarte.
Chelsea set to miss out on Gabri Veiga
Chelsea’s midfield priority remains Caicedo but are also considering adding another midfielder after Caicedo. Several Premier League sides are interested in the Spaniard with Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United also keen on the midfielder. Veiga played 36 La Liga games this season, netting 11 goals and providing four assists.
CFC views him as a possible candidate to add creativity and goal threat in the midfield. However signing him will not be an easy task because of the competition. As things stand, the Blues are likely to miss out on the Spaniard. According to journalist Santi Aouna, PSG are in advanced talks to sign Veiga as progress has been made in negotiations. Les Pariseins want to wrap the medicals by the end of this week.
Chelsea are set to lose their second transfer battle to PSG this summer after Ugarte. Veiga has a release clause of €40 million and PSG are in the process to trigger it. Chelsea have missed out on yet another secondary target as Veiga seems headed to PSG.
The Blues cannot afford to lose out on Caicedo and so far CFC are the favourites to sign the Ecuadorian midfielder. Chelsea and Brighton have been in direct contact for negotiations and talks are expected to continue this week. Caicedo has already agreed personal terms with the Blues but CFC need to reach an agreement with the Seagulls as soon as possible.
Have CFC made a mistake for not pushing enough for Gabri Veiga?
