Erin Cuthbert nets goal in stunning display vs. Northern Ireland, Alsu Abdullina earns Player of the Match vs. Iran, international round-up

Not only are the 19 Blues that will make appearances in the World Cup in the coming days preparing for the weeks ahead, several others west Londoners are showing off on the international stage. In a friendly match against Northern Ireland at Dens Park in Scotland, Erin Cuthbert put in a sensational 90 minute shift for her Scottish National Team in a 3-0 win. The west London midfielder was everywhere, consistently getting into dangerous areas in the final third in addition to firing in shots at Wolves’ goalkeeper Shannon Turner.

Ireland may have ousted the side out of the World Cup, but that did not prevent Cuthbert fresh off being awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University of the West of Scotland from showing out for her national team. Scotland’s No. 22 beat Turner at her near post in the 32′ to open the scoring. From her marvellous turns in the midfield to the constant movement in the box, Cuthbert was far and away the Player of the Match.

Serbian midfielder Jelena Cankovic started for her nation in a friendly against Slovenia, assisting on one of the three goals in a clean sheet for her side. Czech Republic international Kateřina Svitková was subbed into a friendly contest against Slovakia for Eliska Sonntagova in the 61′. Alsu Abdullina, like Cuthbert was awarded Player of the Match for her national team, Russia in its 4-0 triumph over Iran. Abdullina scored the opening goal in the 28′ which was assisted by Fatih Karagümrük forward Natalya Mashina.

On the World Cup preparation side, Sam Kerr played a part in 61 minutes for Australia as the co-hosts of the tournament took down France 1-0. Ève Périsset did not appear in the friendly for Hervé Renard’s team. The wing back did step between the white lines earlier in the month against the Republic of Ireland. For Japan, youngster Maika Hamano came on as a substitute against Panama for the final 29 minutes of the contest.
