Mauricio Pochettino’s former club planning to raid Chelsea for £40m man
Chelsea have already sold Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount from the midfield. Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante left as a free agent and Tiemoue Bakayoko was released by CFC. Now, there is a chance that Conor Gallagher could also depart from the club.
Chelsea wanted a midfield revolution this summer as the Blues looked for perfect midfield partners for Enzo Fernandez. The West London outfit have been locked in negotiations with Brighton and Hove Albion for Moises Caicedo. At this point, the talks are dragging along and even though CFC have agreed on personal terms with Caicedo, they are yet to reach an agreement with the Seagulls.
The Chelsea midfield currently houses Fernandez, Gallagher, Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka. Casadei and Santos have the possibility to leave on loan, so it is imperative that the Blues need to sign more than one midfielder to bolster the engine room. After Caicedo, the West London outfit must target one more midfielder to bolster their depth.
Tottenham Hotspur interested Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
Previously, Gallagher remained a player that CFC were willing to sell if a suitable offer arrived at the table. Back in January, Everton tabled a £45 million offer but the Englishman rejected a move to Goodison Park. According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have recognized Gallagher as a potential midfield target to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Along with Gallagher, Spurs are also considering Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz as a replacement as Hojbjerg could leave the North London outfit amid Atletico Madrid’s interest. The talks are ongoing and if the Danish international departs, Spurs would target Gallagher or Luiz to replace the 27 year old.
New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is an admirer of Gallagher and his work ethic. However, at this point, CFC cannot afford to lose another midfielder. Unless, a couple of midfielders arrive at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea cannot sanction the sale of Gallagher.
Chelsea’s depth in midfield is wafer thin and they do not have enough experienced players. Perhaps only Fernandez and Gallagher qualify as CFC midfielders with adequate experience. Casadei and Santos have not played a single minute in the Premier League whereas Chukwuemeka is still polishing his skills and is a bit raw.
However, if the Blues manage to land Caicedo and one more midfielder, their stance could change on Gallagher. At the moment, CFC remain reluctant to sell Gallagher.
Will the Blues sell Conor Gallagher later in the window?
