1. Ashley Lawrence

Canada may not have begun the World Cup on the right foot as a team, but that did not prevent Ashley Lawrence from making her first good impression since making her move to west London official. One of Chelsea Women’s latest summer transfers played both wings of the her team’s back four against Nigeria in a scoreless draw. One of the key reasons by Emma Hayes was so attracted to Lawrence was on full display against the African outfit.

Having contributed most of the match on the right, Lawrence switched over to the left after Allysha Chapman entered the contest as a substitute. Canada’s No. 10 showed her impressive ball carrying abilities within the first 10 minutes of the contest. She used her strength against Francisca Ordega, took a few dribbles and delivered a sensation ball for captain Christine Sinclair at the top of the box.

The new west Londoner was tied for the team lead during the opener in key passes, constantly making her offensive threat known on the flank. She was one of four Canadians that played the entire match to have completed over 85 percent of her passes including fellow club teammate Kadeisha Buchanan. Lawrence was one of two players for Canada with five or more shot creating actions. Whether it was the left or the right, the Blues’ newest defender showed fans just a glimpse of what she is capable of on both sides of the ball.
