Dortmund 1-1 Chelsea: 3 Blues talking points
By Abdul Abdullahi
Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund played to a 1-1 draw in Chicago, marking the end of Chelsea’s impressive unbeaten pre-season under their new manager, Mauricio Pochettino. During the first half, The Blues dominated and had numerous opportunities to score, but it wasn’t until the 70th minute that Dortmund managed their first shot on target and took the lead. Nonetheless, Mason Burstow’s late goal saved the match for CFC, resulting in a commendable record of three wins and two draws from their five pre-season matches.
Reece James led the team as captain, contributing to a strong defense alongside Silva, Colwill, and Chilwell. Despite challenges with the tricky pitch, Chelsea dominated the first half, creating numerous opportunities. Jackson, Nkunku, and Chilwell orchestrated threatening attacks, and Colwill almost scored from a corner delivery. Unfortunately, the former RB Leipzig attacker suffered a knee injury and had to be substituted, update set to arrive in the coming hours.
Nonetheless, the team remained focused and kept creating chances, including Silva’s well-timed pass to Jackson. Despite Dortmund gaining some momentum, Chelsea’s determined spirit prevailed, thanks to Burstow’s crucial equalizer. Pochettino’s management strategy was evident, as he decided not to make any halftime changes, showcasing the team’s readiness for the upcoming season. Mykhailo Mudryk’s performance was praiseworthy, displaying sharpness and initiative on the pitch, even though he narrowly missed scoring from a distance.
Overall, Pochettino will be satisfied with the team’s progress as they return to England to continue their pre-season preparations at Cobham. The Blues head into the new season undefeated in preseason with three wins and two draws, great way to bounce back after a horrific season. It seems like new era has began under Poch.
