While many west Londoners are down in Australia and New Zealand, the remaining Chelsea Women players began pre-season training on Monday morning back at the training grounds in Cobham. The first scheduled pre-season friendly is against quality opposition, AS Roma at Kingsmeadow on September 3 at 8:00 p.m. BST. Via the club’s social media, numerous returning players from last year’s team in addition to 2022-2023 loanees and newcomers reported to camp for the first time this summer. It was the first chance for the public to see these girls in the new look Chelsea training wear that has to be considered one of the best designs in years.

The 2023-2024 Women’s Super League campaign for the west Londoners does not begin until October 1 when Bethany England and Tottenham travel south for a clash at Stamford Bridge. As the weeks continue, more and more individuals will return to Cobham as the field at the World Cup gets smaller and smaller.

In the club’s videos, newcomer Catarina Macario made an appearance as she seeks to continue her rehab from an ACL tear back in June of 2022. The club will most likely be without her for the few weeks, if not months of the season. Due to the amount of depth including youngsters like Mia Fishel, and Aggie Beever-Jones, Emma Hayes has all the tools to make up at least part of what is lost without a world-class talent like Macario.

Two other players that missed a large portion of 2022-2023, Fran Kirby, and Czech Republic international Katerina Svitkova appeared in the club’s content. Kirby missed the Women’s World Cup with England due to a knee injury in which she required surgery to repair. Svitková played 10 minutes at the end of the campaign against her former club in a 4-0 triumph. The midfielder has appeared in two recent friendlies for her nation against Northern Ireland, and Slovakia.

Erin Cuthbert, Sophia Ingle, Beever-Jones, Jelena Cankovic, and Charlotte Wardlaw among others all looked to have reported to Cobham. There are still decisions to be made on numerous youngsters, but the club must feel that is it important for potential loanees to be around the senior players at the beginning of training.

Chelsea Women prepare for a massive season ahead filled with UEFA Women’s Champions League title aspirations

Emma Hayes’ team will have a target on its back once again both domestically and in Europe. Though it was an up and down journey to get there, the Blues end of season form secured the club’s fourth straight WSL title. Hayes led her team to a historic triumph over Lyon in the Champions League, followed by an impressive display at the Camp Nou. Including the Spring Series, the west London outfit has lifted the top honor in the English top-flight in six out of the last seven seasons.

The competitiveness in women’s football is through the roof. The World Cup brings that conversation to the forefront. Arsenal with the addition of Alessia Russo and its missing players from last season are going to be much better. The two Manchester sides and Aston Villa will also be in the mix as every club has its eyes on finally taking the crown away from the west Londoners.
