Chelsea vs Luton Town: Mauricio Pochettino should drop this star from the lineup
In an attempt to better a tough start to their Premier League season, Chelsea Football Club are set to face Luton Town on August 26th. Chelsea head into this game after they suffered a 3-1 loss against West Ham at the latter’s stadium. Prior to facing West Ham, Chelsea looked good in the opening match against Liverpool which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Luton, on the other hand, have played just one game this season. The team fell short of Premier League toppers Brighton and ended up losing 4-1. On paper, Chelsea are favorites to register their first three points this season when they face Luton. However, if that’s to happen, manager Mauricio Pochettino will have to make some tough calls.
The tough calls will include the Argentine coach dropping a big name from the squad. In this article, we will look at the 23-year-old star Chelsea must drop when they face Luton Town.
Chelsea must drop Conor Gallagher in the upcoming game
When Mateo Kovacic left Chelsea for Manchester City, it became evident the club would miss the Croatian. While some argued Chelsea would find the perfect replacement, they were unable to do so. Instead, the Blues have trusted Conor Gallagher in a role which is not built for him. Naturally, watching Gallagher play, Kovacic’s absence at Stamford Bridge is strongly felt.
In the two Premier League games Gallagher has played this season, he has somehow looked like a fish out of water. Even though he has had a few moments here and there, these moments haven’t compensated for the 23-year-old’s lack of ability when it comes to the defending aspect of the beautiful game. This has indeed become a problem for Chelsea.
Against Liverpool, Gallagher had a forgettable game as he was unable to contribute offensively and defensively. The English player also looked uncomfortable physically as he was dispossessed easily. While many expected Gallagher to do better against West Ham, this game too resulted in disappointment. As a matter of fact, Gallagher was beaten easily by Nayef Aguerd who jumped over the former to score from a corner.
Overall, it seems Conor Gallagher is not comfortable with this new role Chelsea has given him. Hence, it would be better if he takes some time off and understands things better before making the starting 11. In the meantime, Moises Caicedo would be a perfect replacement for Gallagher.
Even though Caicedo conceded a penalty last week, he looks better defensively and will be able to control the game. Starting against Luton will also give Caicedo game time as he can use the experience to prepare for the big teams he will face in the future. It will be interesting to see if Mauricio Pochettino starts the Ecuadorian player. After all, considering his price tag, there will be massive expectations from the player.
