Chelsea’s pursuit of EFL Cup glory begins as they host AFC Wimbledon, a League Two team, in the second round clash at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Despite Chelsea entering at this stage, AFC Wimbledon already upset Coventry City in the first round and aims to replicate that success.

Having finished in the 12th spot during the 2022-23 Premier League season, CFC are venturing into new territory in the EFL Cup this week. This marks their first appearance in the second round of the tournament since the 2016-17 season, in contrast to English teams in Europe who receive a bye to the third round.

Recently, Pochettino secured his first win as Chelsea’s head coach on the third attempt, with a standout performance by Raheem Sterling leading to victory over Luton Town. With Nottingham Forest on Saturday after this upcoming EFL tie on Wednesday, it looks like Poch may rest majority of the first team from Luton last Friday.

Playing at Stamford Bridge enhances Chelsea’s chances of advancing, making them strong contenders for the next round. Pochettino aims to utilize this opportunity to test the younger players in the Blues squad.

Noni Madueke

Following his triumph in the Euros with England Under-21s, a hamstring injury sidelined Madueke during the pre-season. However, he has now resumed training. The winger was among the substitutes for the Blues’ match against Liverpool but did not make an appearance due to his ongoing recovery from the injury.
