Even with success, the first contest of the campaign has consistently not been the kindest to Emma Hayes’ side. The entire WSL remembers the Blues opener in September 2022. It may be difficult to believe, but the last time Hayes’ team secured all three points to begin a domestic season was in 2019 at this same venue against the same opponent. It has not prevented the club from hoisting the title at the end, but in an increasingly more competitive league, it would not hurt to kick things off on a positive note.
At some point this strange streak has to come to a screeching halt. Against a newly promoted side last season, many thought it would be broken. An extensive period of preparation combined with the fact that opening weekend will not be pushed back are all reasons to believe this time around could be different.
