Chelsea Women 6-0 Villa: 3 standout players from conclusive win
3. Niamh Charles
When you go to the Cambridge Dictionary, and look up “on fire” numerous results show up on the screen. Each provides a solid explanation, but if you’re a football fan, all you need to do is think of No. 21 in blue right now. Charles, the Chelsea left-back is exuding heat. Ward’s team stood no chance at extinguishing the threat flying down the flank. For the third contest of the season, Charles completed over 80 percent of her passes.
Her deliveries into the box have been instrumental in the west London side beginning the WSL campaign so well. She earned that goal in the second half. What a brilliant finish defined by awareness, and precision. No. 21 read the deflection to perfection, cutting in front of a lost Ebony Salmon before volleying in out of the reach of the Dutch stop-stopper Daphne van Domselaar.
Many thought she took a step forward in 2022/2023, which she did, but since the World Cup, it has to be said, Charles has been the the more indispensable than anyone on for her club side. Remember when the English international missed England’s squad for the 2022 Euros? That’s what sparked this rise as one of the west Londoners’ first choices in the starting XI.
The consistency she brings to each match has been something we all need to appreciate more. No. 21 earned the PoL’s Most Improved Player last season. It’s still early, but Charles is writing the first two or three pages of her campaign to be Player of the Season.
Emma Hayes’ final few months as the Chelsea Women’s manager continue as the Blues travel north to take on Everton next Sunday afternoon.Â
