Bashir Humphreys

It’s been no secret that Chelsea’s Cobham academy routinely churns out some of the best young talent in Europe. As of late, more talent from the academy are breaking into the CFC first team, notably the likes of Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Levi Colwill and Trevor Chalobah come to mind. 20-year-old Bashir Humphreys now seems to be next in line as the Cobham product that could be on the cusp of a senior team breakthrough.

The England U21 national is currently on loan at Swansea, where as a starting XI regular he has impressed so far. Humphreys has been steadily improving his defensive abilities this season, averaging approximately 1.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and an impressive 4.1 clearances a game in the Championship. However, similar to his fellow Cobham graduate Levi Colwill, it’s Humphreys ability on the ball that’s his most attractive attribute.

The young defender possesses a maturity and composure on the ball beyond his years, using his passing and ball carrying ability to become an asset going forward. According to Whoscored.com, Humphreys is currently boasting an 87% pass success percentage along with about 1.9 long balls played per game. The Cobham product also netted his first senior goal in October with a late winner in a match against Norwich City.

Thiago SIlva’s time in this Chelsea side is nearing its end.  It’s being reported that the Blues are in the market for yet another centre back to prepare for the veteran’s departure. However, we could save millions by giving Bashir Humphreys the chance he rightly deserves in the first team by next season.
