Chelsea Women 3-0 Everton: 3 takeaways from fourth straight multi-goal win
Just hours before Mauricio Pochettino and his Blues picked up a massive point at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea Women continued its regularly scheduled programming. Donning the new unique third kits for the first time this season, Chelsea walked into Walton Hall Park and got the job done.
With the Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester City all dropping points over the weekend, the west Londoners sit three points clear at the top of the league table. Arsenal’s six-goal second half come from behind victory in Leicester prevented Hayes’ side from possessing a four-point edge at the top.
Unlike the Aston Villa game, there were points where the home side nearly caught the traveling team out. Ann-Katrin Berger was thankfully there to keep Everton Football Club at bay. The German was not called upon whatsoever in the west Midlands. A Millie Bright error and a Sara Holmgaard shot inside the area forced Berger’s attention. The offside flag was her friend just before halftime as a goal off of a rebound was chalked off.
No matter how much quality was shown in creating the chance, Brian Sorensen’s Everton couldn’t get it over the line. In the last 450 minutes of football, the side from northern England have scored just one goal against the four-time defending Women’s Super League champions. Led by the always hard-working Erin Cuthbert, and Jessie Fleming among others, the Blues netted three on Walton Hall Avenue for the second campaign running.
The five-time FA Cup winners made a few changes to the starting XI from the Villa match, slotting Sam Kerr up top for Mia Fishel, and Serbian Jelena Cankovic into the midfield. Though the Australian looked off for the majority of the game, her brilliant finish put the match out of reach. Cankovic, on the other hand completed 49 of her 51 attempted passes according to FotMob, more efficient than any Blue on the day.
Here are three takeaways as the west London outfit take one more step toward sending Hayes off into the England sunset.
