Chelsea 5-1 Liverpool: 3 takeaways as James lights up the Bridge
3. Aggie Beever-Jones’ fairytale start just keeps getting better
The former Everton loanee, and England U23 international is for real. Academy graduate Aggie Beever-Jones has played in five games this season. Four of those concluded in her name being on the scoresheet. Reminder, in case you forgot, she’s 20 years old. She was two years old when Mjelde began her career in senior football. Take a second to digest that.
Age is merely a number. No. 33 in blue is adding even more validity to that statement. When Mia Fishel came over from Mexico, many thought the ex-Bristol City loanee was on her way out. Others were of the opinion that a January transfer would be suitable after a few months sitting on the bench. Paul Green, Hayes, and the entire club opted to keep her. Due to that belief, No. 33 has become a revelation in the Blues’ attack. She is not just good enough for senior football, Beever-Jones is at the level of a Chelsea senior player.
Fans had to be sprinting the megastore post-match to snatch a Beever-Jones kit. I mean, if I was there, that’s what I’d be doing. She put pen to paper on a new contract before departing to Everton that keeps her in west London until the summer of 2025. I know its early, but lets get that extension talk going sometime in January. A whole lot of people can see it. James on one side, Beever-Jones on the other, and Fishel down the middle. That’s quite a bright future.
2. Chelsea’s Johanna Rytting Kaneryd continues to show the massive strides she has made since last season
The Swedish international did what Beever-Jones has done in the last four WSL games. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd moved to the bench for the first time since October 22. That by no means hampered her influence on the match. Within her first few seconds on the pitch, the Swede got in behind the Reds’ backline, cut back to her left foot, and laid it on a platter for James to finish off her first CFCW hat-trick.
She didn’t end there though. Just a little over 10 minutes later, from almost the same place, Kaneryd bagged her second assist, finding Sjoeke Nusken making a run from the midfield. Since the international break where she made two appearances for her country, No. 19 has scored one and assisted three.
The 26-year-old showed flashes in her debut campaign with the club. Now, even though it is early, you can clearly see the steps forward she has taken. She is not rushing into decisions. JRK has learned from the early speed bumps. Credit the club. Credit to her national team. Mostly importantly, kudos to her for evolving into one of the most consistent chance creators so far this season. The Swede still possesses that speed, but she is beginning to learn how to use it in productive ways in this new league.
