Chelsea went from leaders to jokes to underdogs and are now a force again
“One regular day at Chelsea, that’s all we ask for” knowing very well that life as a Chels’ faithful is always going to be a real emotional roller coaster.
The Pensioners were slapped with a fine and a two-window transfer ban in 2019 by FIFA. To make things worse, fan’s favorite ‘Eden Hazard’ left the club to join Real Madrid. And for the very first time, Roman Abramovich’s empire looked very vulnerable.
Mr. 33 (Maurizio Sarri) also decided to leave and take up the Juventus job. He helped CFC win the Europa League title before that but the joy didn’t last long as the future seemed very uncertain.
And during such a crisis, the club was rescued and lifted by our very own club legend – Frank Lampard who decided to take on the challenge. Although he didn’t have a lot of managerial experience, he managed the situation very well and secured UCL qualification.
Not only that, he also made great use of our academy products introducing a number of top talents who have now established their names in Europe. He also went on to give Mason Mount the captain’s armband in his last game in-charge. Reece James who also made his debut under him is not only one of the best right backs in the world right now but also a leader in the dressing room at just 23.
Lampard’s term was cut short after a month of poor football but his role during that period cannot be undermined. However his sacking wasn’t mourned by all as Thomas Tuchel went on to win the UCL for Chelsea in a matter of months.
The underdogs beat multiple Spanish giants on their road to Porto where they encountered Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. CFC walked into this game too as underdogs and were not expected to lift the trophy. But the boys made history and landed Chelsea’s second UCL title on a very special night leaving long-lived memories.
