After a disappointing day, The Pride of London examine what Mauricio Pochettino said as Chelsea succumbed to a depleted Newcastle United.
The more prudently assembled yet thin squad of Newcastle prevailed against the mega money-spending CFC. Incidentally, the Blues have many injury problems of their own and are struggling to field or find their best lineup under Pochettino. Nevertheless, there was a worrying element to the west Londoners’ defeat up north. I wouldn’t quite describe the loss as capitulation, but some Blues displays will probably be questioned by fans if not staff. There certainly wasn’t enough of a professional and collective effort to do the job diligently at St. James’ Park. Reece James made some great lunging challenges, although, he should know better as a young but very experienced international and Premier League skipper.
Chelsea were not effective enough going forward either, in spite of that making up for defensive errors and lapses in some recent high profile matches. Obviously Thiago Silva would never make that type of careless mistake. Well, he’s only made a few in a glittering and careful career. Meanwhile the Stamford Bridge team failed to involve their forwards and playmakers as much as they should have. I mean, we are all expecting a lot from Cole Palmer now, possibly unfairly for the amazingly promising player. He must, however, have the ball to impress. While his teammates must help him in other ways to lesson his defensive work load, or free the former Manchester City starlet completely of responsibility at the wrong end. Blues attackers could make further runs to create space for Palmer as well. It’s a work in progress.
What did Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino say subsequent to a drubbing from Newcastle United which also sadly saw Blues captain Reece James dismissed for two bookable offences?
So, what did ‘Poch’ say about the dismantling versus the Magpies?:
"“It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands.“We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning.“We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy.“Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle.“That is why I am so upset with the performance. It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise.“We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off.“We cannot blame the players, it is the team together.“We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn about this situation.“There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength. We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic.”"
