In recent times, the centre-back situations at Liverpool and Chelsea seem to be somewhat interconnected. The Blues have been linked with a potential move for Ibrahima Konate, with his current deal at Anfield set to run out next summer. On the other hand, both clubs are believed to be interested in Marc Guehi, whose contract with Crystal Palace is also in its final twelve months.
Now, it looks like Guehi might not be the only centre-back that both Chelsea and Liverpool have their eyes set on. A Barcelona player is on both of their radars as well, if rumours are accurate.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Liverpool are starting to plan for life without Konate, and they are keeping an eye on Ronald Araujo’s situation at Barcelona. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the Uruguay international as well.
Not too long ago, Araujo was one of Barcelona's most important players and was viewed as a future club captain. But that is no longer the case under the management of Hansi Flick. The Uruguayan has dealt with his fair share of injury problems as well. So, a change of scenery would not be the worst idea.
€60m Liverpool transfer update is bad news for Chelsea
Chelsea need a proven and experienced centre-back right now. It is very clear that the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana are not good enough to be starting for a team with title aspirations.
It is very clear that Chelsea want to sign top young talents and develop them. But at some point, if you want to go from a high-potential team to a winning one, you have to pay the big bucks for the big names.
It would take a transfer fee in the region of €50-60 million to sign Araujo from Barcelona. But would he be the solution for Chelsea at this point, or would he end up becoming part of the problem?
