Ange Postecoglou is the talk of the town after he came out and revealed all of the shortcomings at Tottenham from his first-hand experience. One of his claims, though, has accidentally thrown Chelsea under the bus, too.
Ange Postecoglou criticized Tottenham for their frugality in expendature. Most notably, he called out their resistance to spending big on player wages and how this prevents them from securing top talent.
Unfortunately for Chelsea fans, this doesn't just apply to Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou didn't mention Chelsea, but the same applies to them. Chelsea is bigger than Tottenham in every tangible way, but not as much with their payroll.
Ange Postecoglou accidentally uncovered a Chelsea flaw
You would expect Chelsea to quadruple Tottenham's wage expenditure, given this is the narrative at Chelsea. The Blues spend massive amounts on transfer fees, but not as much with their wages.
Tottenham spends $3,346,849 per week on wages, whereas Chelsea spends $3,851,749. It is not that different, despite Chelsea seemingly having a lot more money than Tottenham, and obviously being a much bigger club than their London counterparts.
Chelsea | Tottenham | |
|---|---|---|
Weekly payroll (base) | $3,851,749 | $3,346,849 |
Annual payroll (base) | $200,290,966 | $174,036,134 |
Average annual salary (base) | $5,413,269 | $4,047,352 |
Man City, on the other hand, has a weekly payroll of $6,157,736, substantially larger than both Chelsea's and Tottenham's. While you can't compare apples to grapes, Man City would argue that to win big, you have to incentivize even bigger.
By no means should Chelsea go out and spend more money. Crikey, they spend more than enough as it is. The thought of Chelsea being bigger spenders is not only terrifying, but it's probably impossible to action.
However, the Blues need to focus on incentivizing their best players more. If they pay more, they may get more out of them. Moisés Caicedo and Cole Palmer, Chelsea's two most important and best players, are only the sixth and seventh-highest earners at the club, respectively.
Without meaning to, Ange Postecoglou tarnished Chelsea under the same brush as Tottenham. This is never a nice feeling, and it should give the Chelsea owners a much needed kick up the backside.
Not that the Chelsea owners have ever listened and learned before... but alas.
