JJ Gabriel shocked the football world yesterday when reports emerged that the highly rated youngster is looking to leave Manchester United and could terminate his youth contract at the earliest opportunity.

The hype surrounding the 15-year-old has been building for some time, with Gabriel even becoming the face of Premier League trading cards this year. His reputation has grown to such an extent that some have already dubbed him the “next Messi”, attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are reportedly among the clubs monitoring Gabriel’s situation, with several understood to be interested in securing his signature on a pre-contract agreement. Chelsea remains the favoured English club, apparently.

Given Chelsea’s track record of recruiting and developing some of the game’s most promising young players, there is understandable excitement among supporters at the prospect of Gabriel eventually pulling on the famous blue shirt.

For a player who has generated this much attention at just 15, the potential is clearly enormous. However, there is still a long road ahead before he can establish himself at senior level.

So, should Chelsea fans be getting excited about the possibility of Gabriel joining the club?

Excitement for the signing

Chelsea fans would have plenty to be excited about if JJ Gabriel were to make the move to Stamford Bridge, with the young attacker already generating significant attention for his ability and potential.

Supporters may have to wait another year or two before Gabriel is ready to become a regular feature of the first team, but simply watching him develop through Chelsea’s academy sides could be enough to generate plenty of excitement. The prospect of seeing one of the most highly rated young talents in the game progress through the club’s youth ranks before eventually making the step up to senior football would give supporters another reason to look towards the future with optimism.

Gabriel is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents around, and his technical ability is a major part of his appeal. The nickname says it all really.

Comfortable receiving the ball in tight areas, taking on defenders and creating opportunities, Gabriel possesses the kind of attacking qualities that can make a player stand out from a young age. Small in stature but incredibly agile, he has the ability to drop a shoulder, beat his man and drive forward with the ball at his feet.

His hat-trick on his European youth debut offered an exciting glimpse of what could lie ahead. Gabriel showcased an impressive first touch throughout, while his third goal particularly highlighted the qualities that have generated so much excitement around his potential. He showed the pace to carry the ball away from defenders before keeping his composure in front of goal to complete his hat-trick.

For Chelsea, his potential arrival would also fit the club’s long-standing focus on recruiting and developing young talent. For supporters, that possibility alone makes his potential arrival one worth watching closely.
