Chelsea's poor recruitment in recent years has been highlighted with their failure to keep up with Europe's best teams.
Since their takeover in 2022, BlueCo have spent well over £1 billion on new players, but few have worked out with most failing to live up to their price tag.
Having signed multiple attackers in over the past few transfer windows, fans would have expected the side to be banging in the goals. That hasn't happened at all, though. In fact, the side have been devoid of any sort of creativity in the final third.
And what makes their struggles even more concerning is seeing the type of talent they could have at their disposal had BlueCo and their sporting department not been so incompetent.
The staggering numbers behind three of Chelsea's worst signings
Fans were treated to a spectacle at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night when PSG hosted Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League semi finals.
A nine goal thriller, which the French champions narrowly edged 5-4, saw fans treated to one of the best games ever.
Normally in such high scoring games the defences are to blame, but in Tuesday's case, it was all down the attacking talent on display. Both team's front three were exceptional and shared six of the nine goals between them.
Undoubtedly, the three best players on the night were Bayern's Michael Olise and PSG duo Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Amazingly, despite the trio being well up there with the best forwards in the world, combined, they cost less than what Chelsea paid for Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Mykhailo Mudryk.
Player | From | To | Transfer Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
Michael Olise | Crystal Palace | Bayern Munich | £50.6m |
Ousmane Dembele | Barcelona | PSG | £43.3m |
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia | Napoli | PSG | £59m |
Alejandro Garnacho | Man United | Chelsea | £40m |
Jamie Gittens | Borussia Dortmund | Chelsea | £51.5m |
Mykhailo Mudryk | Shakhtar Donetsk | Chelsea | £88.5m |
Olise, Dembele and Kvaratskhelia combined cost PSG and Bayern Munich, respectively, a grand total of £152.9 million.
Whereas, Garnacho, Gittens, Mudryk cost Chelsea a combined £180 million — nearly £30 million more than their European counterparts.
European trio massively outperforming Chelsea's
It gets even worse when you look at each players' output this season too.
Garnacho, Gittens and Mudryk have endured disastrous campaigns with the latter serving a four-year ban for breaching anti-doping rules. The Ukrainian hasn't featured since November 2024.
Garnacho and Gittens may as well have been sat on the sidelines with Mudryk, though. The pair have directly contributed to just 18 goals in all competitions.
In stark contrast, Olise, Dembele and Kvaratskhelia have racked up a staggering 104 direct goal contributions between them already this term — 47 more goals and 39 more assists than Chelsea's trio.
Ouch.
