2. Stubborn tactical decisions

There are several things Enzo Maresca has attempted at Chelsea that have failed spectacularly. One of them is inverting his fullbacks into midfield. Of course, there are certain teams and situations where it could work. However, Maresca makes his players do that regardless of the opponent or situation.

Maresca has tried to use Malo Gusto in that role many times. Despite clear indications that playing such a role is not his strength, Maresca has continued with it. Not only is it affecting the team, but it also hinders Gusto’s ability to perform in his preferred role as a fullback.

This inverted move also results in left-sided opposition wingers having free space to exploit Chelsea. It was once again evident against Brentford, as Kevin Schade was able to run through Chelsea’s right side a few times in the first half.

Chelsea had two right-backs in the starting XI, and bizarrely, none of them was allowed to play in a traditional right-back role. It was not the first time either.
