Chelsea have completed their first signing of the summer, bringing in Liam Delap. However, that’s just the beginning, as the Blues are expected to bring in several other players to bolster different positions. To make room for these new arrivals, the club will also need to offload some players. As a result, a number of squad members will either be transferred permanently or sent out on loan.
One of the players who looks set to leave the Blues is goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. Despite performing at a high level for Strasbourg during a season-long loan, the 25-year-old finds no starting place in the Blues’ plans moving forward.
Several clubs have already shown interest in the Serbian keeper. Turkish club Galatasaray now appear to be the frontrunner, having already contacted Chelsea to secure the player’s signature.
The Chelsea Chronicles reported that journalist Sami Yen Haber has confirmed Galatasaray’s interest in the player. He said:
"Galatasaray’s first verbal offer for Petrovic is €5 million for a rental fee and a €15 million purchase option. Negotiations are ongoing."
Galatasaray interested in signing Petrovic from Chelsea
Recently, Chelsea announced their squad for the FIFA Club World Cup. Surprisingly, Petrovic was missing from the list making his departure all but certain now.
This development comes at a time when Chelsea failed to secure the signing of Mike Maignan in time for the Club World Cup, despite their efforts to bring him in for the tournament. However, negotiations for the French goalkeeper are expected to continue after the competition.
Maignan is expected to become Chelsea’s new number one, if the Blues are able to agree a deal with AC Milan with current keeper Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen likely to be pushed down the pecking order. That leaves little to no space for Petrovic.
There are many fans who believe Petrovic is Chelsea's best goalkeeper though. So, the decision to part ways with the Serbian would be a controversial one, if an exit does indeed materialise.
