Could we see Chelsea sign a centre-back in January? Considering their struggles at the back this season, in the absence of Levi Colwill, it might be best if they do add another option there. The likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo might not be good enough to start for the Blues. Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are injury-prone. Josh Acheampong does not seem to have the full backing of Enzo Maresca. And Axel Disasi is not in the long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.

So, all things considered, the centre-back position is a weak spot for Chelsea. Then you consider the worrying thought that the ACL injury might have a long-term effect on Colwill and could potentially prevent him from reaching his potential. Just look at how things have turned out for Fofana, who was once supposed to develop into one of the best defenders in the world.

Then there is the clear lack of experience at the back. That is one position where you could do with a leader, who can organise those around him.

Amid all these issues, it is interesting that the Blues are being linked with a player who left the club for free not too long ago. As reported by Fichajes, Chelsea have been in contact with Antonio Rudiger's representatives and Real Madrid for weeks to explore a possible return of the centre-back to Stamford Bridge. The English club has reportedly already submitted an initial offer of around eight million euros.

Real Madrid are believed to consider this figure insufficient. That being said, Rudiger's contract runs out in the summer of 2026 and there is the possibility that they could see him become a free agent just months later. So, any offers in January would have to be given a consideration unless an extension is agreed by then.

Would Rudiger be the right signing for Chelsea at this point in his career though? Well, we are not completely sure about that.

Rudiger was phenomenal at Chelsea during the Thomas Tuchel era. And he has had some great moments for Real Madrid as well. He has dealt with injury problems lately though. The last thing the Blues need right now is another injury-prone centre-back.

Also, he will be 33 years old by the time next summer rolls around. Now, Chelsea might be looking to recapture the magic of Thiago Silva, but the Brazilian was a very different player. He was technically flawless and an incredible reader of the game. On the other hand, Rudiger's game is built upon physicality and brave front-foot defending. Those are expected to fade away with time.
