Chelsea can look back on October with mixed feelings after surviving a difficult month that tested Xabi Alonso's side on several fronts.
The month that marks Autumn saw some difficult challenges with some tough fixtures, while international duty proved a stop for any momentum. While there have been encouraging moments, the Blues have also experienced frustrating defeats, disciplinary problems and injuries that have exposed some of the weaknesses within the squad.
The Good
Chelsea made an immediate statement after the three-week international break, returning to action with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. Goals from Jordan Henderson and Joao Pedro helped set the Blues on their way to an impressive afternoon, giving Xabi Alonso's side the perfect start to the month.
Everton were next, with Chelsea given another opportunity to collect three points on the road. They managed to do just that, although the victory came with a significant setback as Emi Martinez suffered an injury, taking some of the shine off an otherwise positive result.
There was, however, an even better way to bring the month to a close. Chelsea responded with a convincing 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with Morgan Rogers and Palmer both finding the net. It was exactly the response Alonso would have wanted after two disappointing results, and the performance offered a timely reminder of what this side is capable of when playing with confidence.
Individual positives in October, too, with several players stepping up when needed and others showing why they remain important to Alonso's plans. Ending the month with a win should provide a welcome confidence boost as Chelsea look to carry that momentum into November.
The bad
October proved to be a difficult month for Chelsea, with back-to-back defeats leaving Alonso with plenty of problems to address. The first setback came in a disappointing 2-0 loss to Tottenham, with Mathys Tel and an unfortunate Mike Penders own goal sealing the London derby defeat. Matters were made worse by Cole Palmer receiving the first senior red card of his career, adding another unwanted talking point to an already frustrating afternoon.
There was little time to recover before Chelsea faced another setback at Anfield. Despite drawing 1-1 with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, the Blues were eliminated after losing 6-5 on penalties. Wesley Fofana's missed spot-kick proved decisive in the shootout, making it another bitter disappointment for the travelling supporters. To compound the frustration, injuries continued to take their toll, with Maxence Lacroix among those ruled out, leaving Alonso with further selection headaches.
Ultimately, October has been a month of frustration, lessons and recovery. Chelsea have not been entirely convincing, and there are still issues for Alonso to address, but ending the month with three points against Manchester United gives the club something positive to build on.
