With a couple of weeks left in the winter transfer window, Chelsea do not have a lot of time to make the additions that they need to push for a Champions League qualification spot. They might have won against Brentford this weekend, but the performance was far from the desired level, and it is very clear that Liam Rosenior needs some freshness in his squad.
One position that is in immediate need of reinforcement is centre-back. In fact, that has been the case for months now. Levi Colwill's suffered an ACL injury in pre-season training and even though Enzo Maresca wanted a replacement to be brought in the summer itself, those calls were ignored.
In hindsight, that was a clear mistake. The defence has been Chelsea's weakest aspect this season, even though there have been worrying signs going forward as well, as they have looked out of ideas a lot of the time.
Over the last few days, it has emerged that Chelsea will look to sign a centre-back this winter. And Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on that chase to bring in a defender.
'Chelsea are going all in' - Fabrizio Romano drops brilliant transfer news
That player is none other than Jeremy Jacquet of Rennes. While speaking on the situation, Romano said on his YouTube channel:
"Chelsea are going all in for Jacquet."
It is not going to be straightforward though. Romano also mentioned that there was a Chelsea mission to go and get Jacquet on Friday. But Rennes want a club-record fee for the transfer, around €65 million, which the Blues do not want to spend right now.
Romano has also mentioned that Jacquet is part of a three-man shortlist at Chelsea. So, if things do not move forward in the right direction, the Blues might soon turn their attention elsewhere. Let's watch how this plays out over the next few weeks.
