Chelsea tried to sign Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup campaign but were not successful, failing to meet AC Milan's valuation for the goalkeeper. It remains to be seen if the Blues reignite their interest in the French number one later this summer. It does show though that the club are interested in strengthening their goalkeeping ranks, even though there are suggestions that Enzo Maresca is happy with his options in goal.
Robert Sanchez finished the season brilliantly but over his two years at Chelsea, he has not been a reliable goalkeeper. Filip Jorgensen was not particularly great either. And while Djordje Petrovic had a fantastic season out on loan at Strasbourg, there seems to be a reluctance to make him the first-choice.
So, as the summer progresses, expect Chelsea to be linked with more goalkeepers. Could they try to sign one of Newcastle United's top targets?
As reported by The Telegraph, Newcastle United have begun discussions with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford. The Magpies have been in deadlock over the transfer fee and there are fears internally that they are being stalled in the hope that another club, possibly Chelsea, will enter the race to sign the English goalkeeper.
Chelsea could hijack Newcastle United move for £40m goalkeeper
Trafford is coming off a stellar campaign in the Championship with Burnley. They conceded only 16 goals in 46 games, which is a Football League record. That has seen the former Manchester City goalkeeper's reputation skyrocket.
Chelsea have made it a habit, signing Manchester City academy graduates. Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap, the list goes on. Could Trafford's name be added to it soon?
Most Chelsea fans feel that the club need to sign a goalkeeper. But would it be wise to make a significant investment on someone who is not proven at the top level, when Maignan is available for about half the fee?
