With Chelsea going into a tough run of fixtures, they need to make the most of the relatively easy fixtures. One would imagine that the game against Burnley falls under that category, even if it is away from home. Of course, it is all relative. With no disrespect to the Clarets, the upcoming matches against Barcelona and Arsenal are expected to be much more difficult.
You cannot rely on this Chelsea team though. You never know which version of them is going to show up.
Enzo Maresca's selection is something that has been under the microscope for some time. The Italian does not seem to have a settled playing XI and likes to rotate his options. He has not been helped by the number of injury problems, as well as the need to give a deep squad some playing time in order to keep everybody as happy as possible.
His decision to start with Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah is not one that went down well with the fans though. Many believe that neither is good enough to be starting for Chelsea and when put together, the Blues look especially shaky at the back. That late goal conceded against Sunderland comes to mind immediately in what was an awful piece of defending from both.
Chelsea fans unhappy with Enzo Maresca's decision vs Burnley
One Chelsea fan wrote: "Chalobah and Tosin at the back is my only concern, the rest is balance. Hopefully, it’s enough."
Many have not forgotten that Sunderland game as someone said: "We all remember what happened the last time both Chalobah and Tosin were on at the same time right?"
Maresca consistently overlooking Josh Acheampong is becoming a concerning trend as well. While he has maintained in the media that he trusts him, his team selection paints a very different picture. The Cobham graduate has been much better than both Chalobah and Adarabioyo when given a chance. Another added: "I don't understand why Maresca does not play Acheampong despite being more solid than Tosin."
Another Chelsea fan said: "Really don't understand what Josh Acheampong has done to fall below Tosin in the pecking order. Had a couple of top games and then nowhere to be seen."
Well, let's just hope that we are proven wrong and both Chalobah and Adarabioyo end up having standout games against Burnley. Chelsea need some momentum heading into matches against Barcelona and Arsenal.
