Chelsea have been linked with several midfielders since selling Enzo Fernández to Manchester City, with another name now emerging ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the Blues are preparing a £50 million bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his options in the centre of the pitch.

However, Chelsea fans may not be convinced by the prospect of De Jong arriving at Stamford Bridge. Despite his quality and experience, the Dutchman could represent another expensive gamble in a transfer market where the club needs to make the right decisions. One the club cannot make in pursuit of other midfielders come next year.

De Jong has been linked with a move away from Barcelona, but convincing the Spanish giants to sell one of their established midfielders midway through the season would be difficult. Manchester United have been long-term admirers while rumours of a move to Germany have never gone away, but this is the first links with theBlues, and fans are nit getting excited by the prospecr.

The Dutch midfielder has struggled with injuries over the past 18 months, raising concerns about his fitness and ability to cope with the demands of Premier League football at 29. His wages could also prove a stumbling block, particularly if Chelsea need to offer a lucrative package to prise him away from Barcelona.

There is no denying De Jong’s quality. His ability to carry the ball through midfield, dictate possession and escape pressure would offer Chelsea another dimension in the centre of the pitch. Under Xabi Alonso, those qualities could be valuable in a side looking to control matches and progress the ball more effectively.

However, Chelsea supporters may question whether De Jong is the right investment when the club already has several midfield options to consider. At this stage of the season next year, fans would rather wait and see Alex Scott walk through the Stamford Bridge doors to be the main man alongside Moises Caicedo.

If there is an opportunity for a loan move then I am sure that fans can get behind especially if it doesn’t scupper their move for Alex Scott next summer.
