Chelsea defeated defending champions Liverpool in a thrilling 2-1 victory on Saturday, their first Premier League win in the last four games. But it appeared to have come at a cost, as both of the starting central defenders on the night had to be substituted in the second half. It raised concerns, especially considering the Blues' ongoing injury crisis in that area of the pitch. However, there seems to be some positive news regarding the situation.
Moises Caicedo scored the first goal early on, but Liverpool equalised through Cody Gakpo in the second half. Later on, Brazilian wonderkid Estevao came off the bench to score the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.
Enzo Maresca celebrated by running down the touchline and was later issued a second yellow card and sent off. But Chelsea fans had other things to be worried about coming out of the game.
Josh Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile were both subbed off with what looked like injuries. Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Wesley Fofana are all out with injuries as well. Fortunately, Willy Caballero had a positive update on the situation. According to The Standard, he said:
"The two central defenders, it was just prevention.
“They made a great effort today, but just prevention. We spoke with them already and they said that they are okay, so [it is] good for us."
Chelsea handed double injury boost after Liverpool win
It matters a lot because losing two more centre-backs right now may throw plans off balance, when the team's defence has been patched together in recent weeks. The encouraging injury news will come as a comfort to supporters.
Chelsea now have the international break to work on getting players back to full fitness before returning to competition. Let's see if Maresca has a stronger squad coming out of it.
Furthermore, Trevoh Chalobah will be eligible for the next match after serving his suspension, although Maresca will not be in the dugout following his red card on Saturday evening. The Blues can now take a break, reset, and hopefully get some players before their trip to Nottingham Forest on October 18.
