Chelsea are now said to be in with a chance of landing a transfer target they pursued for a large chunk of the last summer window.
The Blues have an intriguing summer window ahead as Xabi Alonso gets his feet under his new desk at Cobham. Just how much say Alonso will get in signings remains to be seen, with the board having restricted the input of previous bosses.
But whether Alonso has a say or not, much of the attention will be on whether Chelsea decides to invest in the goalkeeper position or not. Robert Sanchez has again come under scrutiny, and many would like to see the Blues sign a new number one.
Mike Maignan back on the market?
Chelsea actually tried to sign a new number one last summer when they pursued Mike Maignan, as was confirmed by AC Milan chiefs at the time. In the end, Maignan was convinced to stay after Chelsea refused to meet the Italian club's valuation, and the stopper penned a new contract.
Just one year on, and Calciomercato are reporting that a deal could be back on. They say Chelsea remain interested in a deal, and that the West London club are 'ready to make an offer'.
A deal could be possible, too, despite the recent contract renewal, with Milan having missed out on the Champions League, leading to the sackings of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
The wholesale changes could alter the way some players see their future at the club, and beyond that, Milan are going to have to raise some money through player sales due to missing out on the Champions League.
Maignan is certainly a player who could raise some money, although given Chelsea were reluctant to pay big money last summer, it remains to be seen what they are willing to pay this summer.
What's clear is that confidence in Sanchez is quickly diminishing, and the Spaniard even missed out on the Spain World Cup squad, having regularly been a number three for his national team.
Sanchez had a good end to last season and a decent start to this one, but he has particularly struggled in the second half of this season, and Alonso is not likely to be impressed by his lack of consistency.
If Chelsea do sign a new number one, it's likely Sanchez will be sold, given the Blues have Filip Jorgensen as a number two, while they are also excited about Mike Penders' future.
