Chelsea's defensive issues have become abundantly clear this season. In the full-back areas, they do have quality talents in the form of Reece James and Marc Cucurella. But the central defensive pairing seems to be letting them down time and again. Against Sunderland, bringing on Tosin Adarabioyo for Josh Acheampong was a mistake and then paid for it with a late goal from the visitors to end up on the losing side.
Trevoh Chalobah has never really been considered a starting quality centre-back for Chelsea either. In fact, a year ago, the club were trying desperately to find him a new home. Yet, here we are, with him being the first-choice out of all the centre-backs at the club.
A large part of that is down to injuries to players like Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile. But at the same time, one cannot deny that Chelsea have filled their squad with plenty of mediocre talents as well. That might sound harsh but it is the truth.
They need some genuine quality at centre-back. And interestingly, it looks like a Bayern Munich regulr is on their radar.
Chelsea's interest in signing world-class defender confirmed
Christian Falk has told CFBayern that Chelsea are interested in signing the Dayot Upamecano next summer for free. But the Frenchman is wanted by Real Madrid as well.
So, signing Upamecano will not be easy. It remains to be seen if Chelsea can win the race and bring him to Stamford Bridge.
If they can't, they would have to look elsewhere. But one thing is clear, sooner or later, this ownership needs to start investing in some proven talents. At the moment, the club seem to be going in circles and it is not a successful one.
The entire transfer strategy seems to be based on succeeding in the future and not now. But when does this never-ending chase end, especially after spending more than a billion pounds? This might very well go down as the biggest failed experiment in football history if Chelsea are not careful.
