Enzo Fernández is heading to Man City on transfer deadline day. It is the grim reality that no Chelsea fan wanted and, in many ways, it was the worst-case scenario for the Blues. What makes the situation even worse is that the London club sent a clear message to the rest of the Premier League: we make deadlines, but we are not strict with them.
In case you are living under a rock, Man City have been interested in signing Fernández for most of the window. Chelsea were obviously aware, and as explained by Sports Illustrated, Chelsea set a deadline a few weeks ago that they would allow Fernández to leave for £120 million.
Fast forward to deadline day, and Chelsea simply said, 'You know what, screw the self-imposed deadline. You can have him anyway.'
The only damage caused by Man City deliberating for a few weeks is that they had to pay £5 million extra, with Fernández expected to cost £125 million on deadline day.

Chelsea went back on their word for the sake of £5 million
The biggest concern for Chelsea fans is not losing Enzo Fernández; that was always bound to happen, anyway. The concern is that Chelsea, as a club, went back on their word. They essentially set the cost of their integrity at £5 million.
What kind of message does this send to clubs engaging in transfer talk with Chelsea in the future? It tells them to listen with noise-cancelling headphones, because whatever boundaries the Blues set, they can be overstepped with cash.
In many ways, it confirms what Chelsea fans have known for years. What was once a great club, a family club, has slowly deteriorated into a money-making cash cow business. You could argue that's football as a whole, and you'd be spot on, but Chelsea are the ringleaders of that bleak circus.
Credit where it's due, criticism where it's deserved
Chelsea have a gigantic squad, and they've started the season better than anyone could have imagined. They have every right to be in high spirits about what they see on the field, but what happens off the field is equally a talking point.
Xabi Alonso has every right to aim for a spot in the Champions League next season. While it's only been two games, the Blues are certainly pacing towards such an honour.
For the most part, they've operated this transfer window well. They've signed experienced players that, at face value, appear to have been led by Alonso himself. They seemed to take their transfer policy that failed in the past, rip it up, and set a whole new rule book. It was needed.
However, selling Fernández on deadline day was the worst possible outcome of the transfer saga. It deserves a royal spot in Chelsea's transfer hall of shame.
Money is one thing, but fans shouldn't put so much weight on the revenue side of deals. What matters more is Chelsea sticking by their word, and they failed miserably to do so. It was all for an extra £5 million that the fans will never see.
