Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta has spent the last few seasons with Atletico Madrid after a glittering career with the Blues but a recent interview shows he still bleeds blue. Azpilicueta, or “Dave” as he is known by many Chelsea fans, was asked who his three toughest opponents have been and he unsurprisingly named three other Chelsea legends.
The first was Eden Hazard who Azpilicueta faced when he was at Marseille and the young Belgian superstar was still getting his career started at Lille. Both stars would join Chelsea in the summer of 2012 with Hazard coming in June as a highly touted signing for £32 million and Azpi joining in August for just £7 million. They would both go on to play massive roles for Chelsea during their time there and it’s insane to think the Blues got so much out of less than £40 million in transfer fees.

The next player mentioned is Didier Drogba who left Chelsea, we thought for good at the time, in the summer that Azpilicueta arrived and the pair faced off in the Champions League when Drogba was at Galatasaray. Drogba would later return to Chelsea for one more year and helped the Blues win the 2014-15 Premier League title along with the last player on this list.
Last but not least, Azpi calls out Diego Costa as his final opponent and the pair faced off in Europe while Costa was with Atletico Madrid. Costa would join Chelsea in 2014 for £32 million and would lead the line in two Premier League-winning campaigns in 2015 and 2017.
The Spaniard/Brazilian would only spend three seasons at Chelsea but would score a remarkable 52 goals in 89 matches for the Blues. It’s safe to say that they have missed having a striker of his quality and fight since he departed back to Atletico Madrid.
Cesar Azpilicueta is a proper Chelsea legend that may still be underrated by the fans because of his cool demeanor and no-nonsense approach to the game. He made more than 500 appearances for the club and lifted 9 trophies during his decade at Stamford Bridge. He is the type of the leader that the current squad is missing as they could do with someone that gives his all for the badge every time he steps on the pitch.
