Chelsea legends do not often tell one of the club’s brightest young stars that his future should lie elsewhere. Yet that is exactly what has happened this week, and Chelsea fans are unlikely to take the suggestion lightly.
Chelsea legend Frank Leboeuf has called for Estêvão Willian to leave Stamford Bridge, arguing that Chelsea should sell the winger for his own good and give him the regular first-team football he needs to continue developing.
For a player who has quickly become a fan favourite, the idea of Chelsea letting Estêvão go is understandably difficult for supporters to stomach. The Brazilian has won over the Stamford Bridge crowd with his fearless performances, rapid adaptation to English football and obvious talent despite his age. After arriving with huge expectations, many fans already see him as one of the club’s future stars, making the suggestion that Chelsea should sell him particularly controversial.

For fans in the Matthew Harding Stand, the frustration is understandable: Estêvão has shown enough to deserve more opportunities. The problem is that he has Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers ahead of him, while he has also been used largely as a right wing-back, a role that does little to showcase his attacking strengths.
Estêvão is reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated with his lack of opportunities this season. The Brazilian international has become a peripheral figure under Xabi Alonso, managing just 23 minutes across Chelsea’s opening five Premier League fixtures.
Despite earning another Brazil call-up during this international break, Estêvão has also struggled to make the impact at international level. He failed to steal the spotlight in the first game, while Brazil’s second fixture proved more comfortable. Even then, he did not start and was limited to around 30 minutes, with little time to make a meaningful impact.
That is what makes the situation so frustrating for Chelsea fans. Perhaps the uncomfortable truth is that Estêvão needs to look elsewhere for the regular minutes he simply cannot find at Stamford Bridge right now. It would be a real shame to see a player with his talent leave Chelsea because the club cannot find a consistent place for one of its brightest young stars in the starting XI.
