It is no secret that Chelsea need a striker right now. They need someone who can score goals on a consistent basis for them. Their own version of Erling Haaland, Harry Kane or someone in that same vein. Of course, those players are rare and come at a premium. The Blues have rarely gone for established names since their change in ownership though.
One could argue that that is the reason they find themselves in this position. Despite spending over a billion pounds, they don't have a reliable striker at the club. That is remarkable and has taken some doing on the part of the club for sure.
Joao Pedro has been decent. He does not look like the solution though. The Brazilian has a lot to like about his game. But he is clearly not the man to lead the line and score 25-plus goals every season for Chelsea.
On the other hand, Liam Delap's signing looks set to be a complete flop. He has not scored a league goal for the club so far. Overall, he has scored twice in 18 appearances. And he is not helping the team much with his overall game either. Surely sticking with Nicolas Jackson would have been the better choice after what we have seen so far this season.
Chelsea linked with move for 21-year-old Argentine striker
Unsurprisingly, when one project signing has not worked out, Chelsea's solution is to go after another one. It is a 21-year-old Argentine striker they have on their radar now. And he is not a premier goalscorer either.
As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football 365), Chelsea have scouted 21-year-old Bologna forward Santiago Castro. They have sent officials to Italy to take a ‘closer look’ at the Argentine striker.
Castro just does not look like the solution though. He has scored 13 goals in 57 Serie A appearances for Bologna. Before that, he had scored just 9 times in 64 appearances for Velez Sarsfield back in Argentina.
It is hard to imagine that Castro would join Chelsea and immediately transform into an elite goalscorer. At best, he looks like another project signing. How many more of those can the Blues make before accepting that their model is failing and needs changes?
