Chelsea make final decision on world-class defender's blockbuster return

It looks like Chelsea have made a final decision on signing the elite defender they have been linked with for a while.

One area where Chelsea need to strengthen in the near future is their defence. Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury in pre-season and it remains to be seen if he will be the same player when he returns from such a significant injury, whenever that may be. On the other hand, there are plenty of other centre-backs at the club, currently dealing with fitness issues.

One would imagine that both Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana are close to their returns, with the international break giving them some extra time to recover. On the other hand, there was a positive update on the situations of Josh Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile, both of whom had to be taken off against Liverpool. Fortunately, it looks like neither injury is serious.

That group of defenders does not feel any fan with confidence though, neither in terms of quality nor fitness history. Just compare their options in that position to that of Arsenal. So, Chelsea fans are hoping that a quality centre-back is signed by the club in the near future.

Marc Guehi is someone they have been linked with for a while now. And it looks like a final decision has been made regarding the possibility of a move taking place.

As reported by Express, a move for Guehi, who is out of contract at Crystal Palace next summer, is off the table. Despite the defender being held in high regard by Enzo Maresca, he will not return to his former club.

Liverpool almost signed him in the summer before a move fell apart in the final steps. On the other hand, Guehi has been loosely linked with Real Madrid in recent times as well.

So, all things considered, he is not going to have any lack of suitors when he leaves Crystal Palace. And with his contract running out, it is most likely going to be in the winter, as the Eagles surely won't want to see him depart for nothing.

Let's see what the future holds for Guehi. A move to Liverpool looks the most likely route. Perhaps Real Madrid could make their move, especially if he becomes available as a free agent. But unfortunately, it looks like a return to Chelsea is not on the cards for the Cobham academy graduate. Someone like him could have been perfect for this team but it looks like the Blues remain reluctant to make a push to sign proven and experienced players.
