Chelsea's need for quality defensive additions this summer has been obvious for quite some time.

After a season littered with poor discipline and inconsistent performances at the back, adding experience and proven quality will be one of Xabi Alonso's biggest priorities when he officially takes charge on July 1.

As a result of what they know they need, the Blues had been linked with making an audacious move for Ibrahima Konate after the Frenchman announced he's leaving Liverpool as a free agent.

The 27-year-old would certainly bring experience having lifted five major trophies, including the 2024-25 Premier League title during his time at Anfield, but it seems Chelsea's decision makers have withdrawn their interest.

Chelsea make Ibrahima Konate transfer decision

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have no plans to make Konate an offer despite having the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer once the summer transfer window opens later this month.

Even though Liverpool wouldn't receive a fee, signing the Frenchman would still be an expensive operation due to the defender's mammoth salary demands and hefty agent fees.

Chelsea, under BlueCo, have repeatedly shown a reluctance to hand out huge salaries, preferring instead to focus on younger players tied down to longer contracts with more controlled, incentive-driven structures. Reece James has been one of the most recent players to agree to this kind of set up.

But back to Konate — there is no doubting the 6' 4" centre-back would have offered Alonso a lot, but after weighing up the potential cost, it seems the Blues aren't so keen after all.

The two clubs he could join instead

Even though Konate won't be heading to Stamford Bridge, he is still set for a huge move in his career.

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are currently in discussions over a potential deal for the 27-year-old, who is currently preparing to represent France in this summer's 2026 World Cup in North America.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich rarely spend their time chasing footballers they do not believe can improve their first teams, so expect one of the two to make an official announcement sooner rather than later.

During his five years at Liverpool, Konate, who joined from RB Leipzig for £36 million after the Reds activated his minimum release clause, went on to feature in 183 games in all competitions, directly contributing to 11 goals along the way.
