All the clubs have stepped up their transfer operations, with the January transfer window quickly closing on its conclusion. Chelsea are no exception, as there are still a number of areas which they need to strengthen if they want to compete for major titles in the coming years, and even finish in a Champions League qualification spot this season.

As things are currently for the Blues, they would atleast need a new centre-back, a goalkeeper and a top-level striker in order to contend for the top spot in the Premier League. However, there has been some development regarding these areas.

For the centre-back position, the Blues are currently believed to be in negotiations over a move for Jeremy Jacquet of Rennes. Marcos Senesi of Bournemouth and Jacobo Ramon of Como have also been linked, in case a move for the Frenchman does not materialise.

In the goalkeeping department, Chelsea have recalled Teddy Sharman-Lowe from Bolton Wanderers, whilst also being linked with Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin. On the other hand, Filip Jorgensen is believed to be eyeing the exit door. And now there has been a recent update regarding the third area of need as well.

According to Indykaila News, who have 700,000-plus followers on X, Julian Alvarez is set to be on the market this summer, and Atletico Madrid are ready to let him go. The talk is that he’s eager to return to England, and Chelsea are already making moves to secure the Argentine international. Insiders are suggesting a transfer price tag of around £75 million.

Alvarez has had a great individual run at the Wanda Metropolitano since his move from Manchester City in 2024. The 25-year-old Argentine has scored 40 goals and provided 13 assists in 84 games for Atletico Madrid.

However, after winning the Champions League, FA Cup, and two Premier League titles for City, he surely would have hoped to win even more silverware, but that hasn't happened under Diego Simeone yet. And as things stand, they do not even look close to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

It had previously been reported by other outlets that Atletico Madrid has no desire to part ways with Alvarez and may ask up to €150 million to sanction a move this summer. However, now the new report claims that the Argentine seeks a return to the Premier League and the La Liga side are ready to grant his wish.

Chelsea spent nearly £100 million to sign Joao Pedro and Liam Delap last summer, but neither has established themselves as a consistent goalscorer. The Brazilian international has performed marginally better, scoring 11 goals in 31 games for the Blues, while the former Ipswich Town man has only 3 goals.

So, it seems like the Blues have learnt their lesson, if the report is indeed accurate, and intend to pursue a proven goalscorer this time. Will they be able to bring in the Argentine this summer? Only time will tell.
