Chelsea has one of the most impressive front threes in the Premier League right now. They have João Pedro up front, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer playing as two number 10s behind him. However, Michael Olise reminded them what they could have had in the Champions League last night.
Olise scored twice, with his first being a sensational goal against Bodo/Glimt as Bayern Munich won 5-0. Olise's all-round game was excellent, and he also set up Harry Kane's goal with an excellent cross from a free-kick.
In five games so far this season, Olise had five goals and two assists. He has become an assist king, making seven in eight games, as France made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup over the summer. Last season for Bayern, he managed 31 assists with 22 goals in 51 games.
His career path is unusual; Olise spent seven years at Chelsea's academy. However, he then went to Manchester City before beginning his professional career with Reading. Olise was way too good for the Championship and went on to play for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Before joining the Eagles, Chelsea did show interest in him.
Chelsea had chances to bring Michael Olise back
In 2023, there were reports that Olise was on the verge of joining Chelsea. However, he ended up staying at Palace for another year before joining Bayern the following year. The winger was again linked with the Blues before he joined the Bundesliga side.
Olise is regarded as one of the best attacking players in the game right now. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Liverpool showed interest in him during the last transfer window. However, he is contracted to Bayern until 2029. Olise has also been nominated for the Ballon d'Or.
Chelsea have had a mixed start to the season; they have won all their games so far, barring a defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League last weekend. The defeat to the Gunners was a reality check for Xabi Alonso's side. Many were fancying Chelsea as title contenders, especially as they have no European football this campaign. However, the defending champions Arsenal showed how far ahead of the Blues they still are.
Fans at Stamford Bridge will wish that Olise had stayed at Chelsea when he was a youth team player, or that the Blues had managed to sign him when they had chances earlier on in his career. Olise is a right-winger, but he can also play as an attacking midfielder. Therefore, he still would have fit into Alonso's 3-4-2-1 formation.
