Chelsea’s Murillo decision could (finally) reshape their identity

More of what works shouldn't be rocket science, right?

Thinking back to Chelsea's best signings over the last few years, they all have one thing in common. They were established Premier League players, at the top of the pile for their former clubs.

We're talking the likes of Joao Pedro, Moisés Caicedo, and Pedro Neto, to name just a few. Chelsea had had the most success in this kind of market, and that's exactly why they need to pursue Murillo harder than they are.

Graeme Bailey has said that Chelsea 'have weighed up' a bid for Murillo. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean too much to fans. I weighed up having eggs for breakfast this morning, but opted for cereal instead. Chelsea needs to do more than simply 'weigh up' Murillo. They need to put him in a bowl and pour milk over him. Oh, sorry, I was still in the cereal analogy.

Murillo is not a typical Chelsea signing, but that's why they need him

Murillo feels like an old-school Chelsea signing. In recent history, the Blues have focused on signing young players from, let's face it, Strasbourg. We all know the reason why, but it is hindering Chelsea's ability to secure top talent.

Yes, Chelsea needs to focus on the future, but they need to strike the right balance. Murillo is a player who would come in and not need any time at all to gel with his new teammates.

Murillo showcases talent in abundance. He is very much of the ilk of 'no nonsense' defending, and he isn't afraid to clear the ball out of dangerous areas.

Murillo can play in a few different positions, which might benefit Chelsea. He is one of the most versatile defenders in the Premier League, and this is exactly what Liam Rosenior needs as he's yet to decide on his best defensive setup.

These days, he primarily plays as a center back. However, he is also capable of playing as a full-back. Chelsea doesn't need full-backs, so he would most likely operate as a center back, but it's nice to have the option regardless.

Signing a top player from a team outside of the traditional Big Six feels like a rarity for Chelsea these days. However, when they've done it, they've reaped the rewards.

Murillo feels like an absolute no-brainer signing, particularly around the $70 million mark. Unfortunately for Chelsea fans, though, the obvious benefit of this transfer probably won't be noticed by the board. That's just the way the cookie crumbles at Stamford Bridge.
