Enzo Fernandez has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism for his performance against Bayern Munich. Incidentally, reports are also emerging in Spain that Chelsea might be ready to part ways with the Argentine World Cup winner if certain conditions are met. That would involve a Real Madrid midfielder in return plus a transfer fee as well.
Fernandez has been on the radar of Real Madrid going back to his time at Benfica. And it looks like Chelsea might now be opening up to that prospect as well.
Fernandez's output under the management of Enzo Maresca has been phenomenal. But there are question marks over his overall game. He is also not the most athletic midfielder and can be found lacking in the defensive phase of the game. Perhaps Chelsea need someone who is more mobile in that role, especially in big games.
As reported by Defensa Central, Chelsea are willing to accept Fernandez's departure if the player openly requests a move to Real Madrid, but under certain conditions. The first is that Eduardo Camavinga would be included in the deal. The second is that Los Blancos offer at least an extra €50 million.
Chelsea ready to offer Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid in swap deal
Fernandez's development at Chelsea has been curious, to say the least. Early on, he was viewed as someone who was brought in to control the game from the middle of the park. He did seem more suited to that role and had some standout performances. The one against Liverpool on opening day of the 23/24 season comes to mind.
But under Maresca, he is playing as more of a box-crashing midfielder instead of someone who dictates the tempo of the game. Last night against Bayern Munich, he had only five passes in the first half. That just goes to show how little Chelsea rely on him when it comes to building up play.
The thing is, it does feel like there are better options out there for this role. But then again, there are other things that Fernandez brings to the table. Despite all the criticism, one thing nobody can deny is his effectiveness. He has been scoring and assisting consistently in this new role. Secondly, he is a leader who has captained Chelsea on numerous occasions over the past few seasons. Is that the type of player they can afford to let go right now?
