Joao Pedro was sidelined due to injury for Chelsea's 2-1 win over Spurs on Tuesday but there is hope the forward will be back by the weekend.

The Brazilian has been one of Chelsea’s most important player this season. His 20 goals saw him deservingly crowned the Blues' Player of the Year.

However, his absence against Spurs, although it did not effect the result, was a worry, but thankfully, the situation doesn't sound too serious based on the latest update from interim manager Calum McFarlane.

Calum McFarlane provides reassuring Joao Pedro update

Speaking to Chelsea's official website after last night's match, McFarlane confirmed Pedro missed the game after picking up a slight knock following the Blues' FA Cup final defeat against Manchester City last weekend.

"Joao Pedro had a slight knock.

It’s nothing that we're massively concerned about but, again, with the quick turnaround from City, it just wasn't worth risking Joao Pedro in that moment."

That update will come as a huge relief to Chelsea as the team prepare for their final game of the season against Sunderland on Sunday.

Reece James and Levi Colwill could also return against Sunderland

Pedro was not the only notable absentee against Spurs either, with Reece James and Levi Colwill also missing the game.

Given the amount of fitness problems Chelsea have dealt with throughout the season, their absences were just the latest in a long line of injuries.

None of the trio are expected to be out for long though after McFarlane provided an optimistic update on all three, revealing he is "hopeful" they can return in time for the weekend.

"It’s definitely a wait and see.

We've got a little bit of time from now until then, so we're hopeful, but we won't know that until we see how the next couple of days unfold."

That will at least give Chelsea supporters some encouragement heading into Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season away to the Black Cats.

James’ ongoing fitness struggles have been well documented over the last few years, but Chelsea still look like a completely different side whenever their captain is available and fully fit. The same applies to Colwill.

The centre-back is one of the team's most important defenders, particularly due to his discipline and balance at the back.

Their absences against Spurs were noticeable, so let's hope they can return in time to feature at the Stadium of Light.
