Chelsea needed to keep a positive transfer balance in this summer window after being fined by UEFA recently. They were able to do that, with their recent signings being successfully registered for the Champions League this season. Of course, in order to achieve that, the Blues parted ways with a number of players over the last several weeks. But on the other hand, there were those that the club were not willing to go, whether it be starters or options on the bench.
Chelsea have one of the strongest midfield departments in all of Europe right now. And they have only added to it this summer.
Andrey Santos is now a part of the team after spending an exceptional loan spell at Strasbourg. Dario Essugo has also completed his move to Stamford Bridge, and while he has not played yet, he was extremely impressive in pre-season. If Romeo Lavia can stay fit, he would almost be like a new signing himself.
Santos was a man in demand this summer though. A lot has been made about a £60 million bid from the Saudi Pro League being turned down. But there was interest in him in the Premier League as well.
Chelsea rejected £45 million offer from West Ham United
As reported by The Mirror, West Ham United saw an approach worth up to £45 million knocked back in August. The message from Chelsea has been consistent all summer in that Santos was not available for transfer.
Caicedo seems to be dealing with some fitness issues while away on international duty. Essugo is believed to have picked up an injury while training with the Portugal youth international side as well. So, we could see a lot more of Santos in the coming weeks.
Santos has so far been used as an option off the bench. But his versatility means that he can fill in all three midfield positions in Enzo Maresca's system. So, it is not hard to understand why the Italian is believed to have been keen to keep the Brazilian midfielder.
Santos is now part of the Brazil national team picture as well. Carlo Ancelotti is known for his ability to improve and get the best out of players. That should have the midfielder as well and do not be surprised if he is actually competing for a starting spot by the end of this season at Chelsea.
