Chelsea have rarely signed players in their prime in recent times. But if reports coming out of Spain are accurate, then they have set their eyes on one of Newcastle United's best performers at the moment. Signing him would not be simple though as there is competition for his signature, namely from Manchester United.

The player in question is none other than Harvey Barnes. The 27-year-old Newcastle United is playing some of his best football right now, which appears to have drawn the interest of the two Premier League giants.

As reported by Fichajes, Manchester United and Chelsea have started a transfer tug-of-war by submitting a joint bid of £60 million to Newcastle United for Barnes. Both clubs believe he could be a key signing to strengthen their sporting projects.

Despite the £60 million offer, Newcastle United have no intention of parting ways with Barnes. He is viewed as an integral part of their current setup.

Barnes has always been a steady performer in the Premier League. This time around, he has taken his game to a new level in the Champions League with four goals and an assist in five appearances in the competition so far this season.

Now, there is no doubt that Barnes is one of the best wingers in the Premier League. But is he the type of player who takes Chelsea to the next level?

It does not feel like so. They already have Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens on the left flank. Both have had some struggles settling into life at Chelsea, but lately, they have shown a ton of quality as well. Also, Pedro Neto is capable of playing there.

If Chelsea do want to sign someone for that position, it should be an elite option like Vinicius Jr, who will come in and potentially change the landscape of the Premier League. We could be wrong, but it does not feel like Barnes will do that for the Blues.
