For a long time, Nico Williams has been considered among the best talents in Spanish football. It is remarkable that Athletic Bilbao have been able to keep him this long. On more than one occasion, he has looked close to joining FC Barcelona, only to stay put at his boyhood club. He is 23 years of age and one would imagine that at some point, he will make that long-awaited move to one of Europe's top teams. Could Chelsea be his next destination?
Chelsea did add three wingers to their squad in the summer. Estevao made his pre-agreed move to Stamford Bridge from Palmeiras. On the other hand, Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens were signed from Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, respectively. In the future, Geovany Quenda will join the Blues from Sporting CP.
Despite that, according to reports in Spain, it looks like Williams has caught the eye of Chelsea. In fact, they have even submitted an offer to sign him, but are not the only ones.
As reported by Fichajes, Chelsea and Tottenham have submitted offers of €70 million to try to convince Williams. Athletic Club are watching the situation closely and want to keep him.
Chelsea reportedly submit bid to sign Nico Williams
Williams is one of the most talented wingers in Europe. His output is not what you would from a player of his reputation but it is important to remember that he is still just 23 years old.
Now, signing him won't be simple. Barcelona have tried multiple times and failed. And he has a long-term contract that runs until 2035. So, Athletic Bilbao are under no pressure to make a quick decision, unless they are desperate to bring in a massive transfer fee.
To be very honest, it does not feel like Williams is someone who should be on Chelsea's radar right now. It does not make sense considering how stacked the Blues are on the wings and Quenda is only going to make them stronger. So, do not be surprised if this rumour leads to nowhere of substance.
