Chelsea failed to capitalize on teams around them dropping points in the Premier League last weekend, as they could not defeat Brentford. However, they can still control their destiny in the UEFA Conference League with a strong away performance against Legia Warszawa on Thursday. But to do that, certain players need to step up, and here are three of them.
1. Cole Palmer
Chelsea’s talisman has yet to rediscover its best form. The absence of his trusted teammates, multiple injuries, and Enzo Maresca’s questionable tactics have all contributed to his recent struggles. Last Thursday, however, he assisted Enzo Fernández for Chelsea’s winner against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, his first goal involvement across all competitions in over 10 matches.
Palmer had thrived regardless of formation or tactical setup for nearly 18 months since signing for Chelsea. For fans, it’s almost unthinkable to see a player of his caliber go so long without contributing to a goal. Though he was recently called to Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, an injury forced Palmer to return to Chelsea. The two-week rest should serve the 22-year-old well.
Fortunately, the two players he has linked up well with, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, are both back from their injuries. While it may take some time for the pair to regain top form, having them around Palmer could make a significant difference for the Englishman.
In the 2023–24 season, when Chelsea struggled to find answers, it was often Palmer who carried the team. His vision, ability to pick out impossible passes, and excellent finishing are well-known among fans. It’s up to him now to show he can finish the season strongly. After not being selected for the group stage of the Conference League, he’ll be eager to leave his mark in the knockout rounds.
