And this morning, reports emerged that Chelsea have declared an interest in a Manchester City defender as they consider reinforcing their backline.
But there’s one detail that stands out. There’s a new name creeping into Chelsea’s transfer conversations, one that wasn’t there a month ago: Abdukodir Khusanov.
According to a report from Mark Brus' Daily Briefing, Chelsea have identified the Manchester City defender as a "great fit" for their system, with sources suggesting a January bid isn't off the table and one Xabi Alonso is looking to sanction.
For a defence that has looked shaky and short of leadership all season, the idea of a composed, ball-playing 22-year-old walking through the door feels almost too good to be true. That's because it probably is.
A good fit, bad timing
Scratch beneath the headline, and the timing makes little sense, but the identity of the player does.
Khusanov isn't a fringe player counting down the days until his next move. He's an important part of Enzo Maresca's plans, even if he isn't currently a regular in the starting XI. City trust him with meaningful minutes in a squad still fighting on multiple fronts.
A right-sided centre-back, Khusanov brings pace, aggression and a willingness to step forward and win the tackle rather than simply contain his opponent. Those qualities make him a fascinating option for Chelsea, particularly given their need for greater consistency at the back. An upgrade on Josh Acheampong's current ability and an improvement on what Wesley Fofana can ever offer.
And at a reported £60 million valuation, this isn't a player Manchester City would casually let go.
Players of Khusanov's profile don't simply walk away from Manchester City in January, regardless of how flattering Chelsea's interest might be. If anything, this is the kind of rumour that says more about Chelsea's ambitions than City's vulnerability: always ambitious, but seemingly always a step too late.
