Lisandro Martínez certainly ruffled a few feathers after Tuesday night's match in Madrid, potentially putting his Manchester United future in doubt. If the situation escalates, Chelsea could look to take advantage and explore a move for the defender in January.
Now, Chelsea could have an opportunity to explore a move for Lisandro Martínez if tensions at Manchester United continue to grow, or should Chelsea pass the opportunity and let him leave the Premier League. The Blues must decide whether the Argentine defender would be the right addition to Xabi Alonso's squad.
Martínez is a combative centre-back who offers aggression, intensity and quality in possession. Those qualities could appeal to Alonso, who wants his defenders to be comfortable building from the back and progressing the ball under pressure. The Argentine has the technical ability to fit that system, while his competitive nature could bring another dimension to Chelsea's defence.
However, his performance against Tottenham last weekend raised questions, with the goal conceded doing little to enhance his reputation. While Martínez fits the profile of a left-sided centre-back and could suit the left of a back three, Chelsea already have Levi Colwill to consider.
For me, there is no contest. I would take the Englishman over Martínez every day of the week, particularly given Colwill's potential and familiarity with the club. Chelsea should be looking for signings who genuinely improve their existing options rather than simply adding another recognisable name.
The Blues must be careful not to mistake frustration at another club for an opportunity they need to pursue, they have done it before. Martínez's reported outburst and questions over his future at Old Trafford may put him on Chelsea's radar, but that alone is not a reason to make a move.
Think smart, Chelsea, and consider the other options available this summer, as they will probably need another centre-back going forward. There are reasons for that.
His injury record is another concern. Martínez has struggled with fitness during his time at United, and Chelsea cannot afford to sign another defender who spends too much time on the sidelines. We have Fofana for that. His aggression and ability on the ball are valuable qualities, but reliability must be just as important when assessing potential signings.
The situation at Old Trafford has certainly brought his future into question. Following United's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid, Martínez reportedly criticised the club's recruitment and director of football Jason Wilcox, arguing that the squad needed greater investment.
He later apologised for the timing and manner of his comments after speaking with the club's leadership. While the episode may fuel speculation over his future, Chelsea should focus on whether he represents the right signing for them, rather than getting caught up in the drama at United.
Hopefully they will do that, and keep other options open.
