Chelsea could return to the transfer market in January as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his squad following a busy start to the season.
The Blues have already shown they are willing to spend big on players they believe can improve the team, but their next target — Bournemouth's Alex Scott — could prove difficult to land.
Liverpool are also monitoring the situation, meaning Chelsea may have competition if they decide to make another move. However, there has been a significant development that could open the door to a deal in the winter window.
Chelsea must meet one huge demand to sign Alex Scott
According to the Evening Standard, the Cherries, despite being adement Scott won't be going anywhere anytime soon, are now willing to cash in in January, but
There is a one major condition attached to any potential deal, though. Bournemouth want an offer worth more than £100 million if they're to seriously consider letting the midfielder leave.
That is a significant increase on Chelsea's summer attempts to sign the England international. The Blues reportedly made multiple bids, including one worth around £64 million, but Bournemouth refused to enter negotiations.
The situation has now changed, with Scott having rejected offers to extend his contract. His current deal runs until 2028, meaning the clock is ticking for Bournemouth.
However, money is not the only factor that will determine whether a January transfer happens.
The Cherries are also understood to want their Premier League survival to look likely before agreeing to a sale. If they remain in danger of relegation — where they are now — keeping Scott could be more important than anything else.
Chelsea have a decision to make over their midfield
There is a clear reason why the Blues want Scott. Xabi Alonso needs to consider his midfield options following Enzo Fernandez's £125 million move to Manchester City in the summer, and Scott is a player they have already tried to bring to Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old has established himself in the Premier League since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023. He has also recently become an England international.
However, spending more than £100 million on one player is a huge decision, particularly when Chelsea have other areas of their squad they need to bolster. Liverpool's interest could also complicate things, especially given their connection to former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.
Chelsea have already shown they rate Scott highly, but their previous offer was nowhere near Bournemouth's valuation.
As things stand, a January move is possible, but not guarenteed. Bournemouth's league position could prove just as important as the money on offer, leaving Chelsea with plenty to consider before the window opens.
